Pecha Kucha Norwich

If you are not doing anything this Sunday evening (15th Jan) then why not get down to Cinema City for the Pecha Kucha night being held there.
Pecha Kucha is a creative speaking event that originates from Japan. (Pecha Kucha is Japanese for “chit chat.”) Its unique speaking format was conceived by a group of architects in Tokyo as a way to get architects to talk faster during presentations. Ten individuals, from a wide-range of creative disciplines, are featured at each event. In the past this has included designers, painters, sculptors, musicians, choreographers, writers, photographers and even puppeteers. Each speaker has twenty slides set on a timer for twenty seconds per slide, so each talk is only six minutes and forty seconds long.

Member of the month is......The Click!

The next Member of the Month is a big one – it goes to The Click for smashing print room records in terms of prints per hour and for sheer dedication in following through this project right from design to actual printing.

The Click is a creative design consultancy based in Norwich, England. Established seven years ago, it is made up of five members of staff and works with clients across the UK.

The Click first came to Stew Print Rooms for a team building session and liked it so much they came up with The Print Sale project which they explain more about here:

“The Print Sale has been set up to capture ideas flying around the studio, get them on paper and support good causes in the process. The posters feature thoughts, ideas and little witticisms dreamt up by the team at The Click. Each one is screen printed with vibrant inks on GF Smith Colorplan stock. Print runs are strictly limited and all profits are donated to good causes.

100% of profits from sales will be shared between a selection of charities that hold significance for members of the team. These are: Age UK, Alzheimer's Society, Asperger East Anglia, Bowel Cancer UK, East Anglia's Children's Hospices and Mustard Soup.”

We have had Mo-man Daryl Williams down at Stew printing up these beauts of tees all for the good cause that is Movember. I think he has sold out of the first run but says if enough people pester him he will print some more - so get pestering!! Statement from Joni Smith.

This exhibition is a collection of thoughts that surround a certain genre of scientific enquiry. Theories such as Quantum Physics, String and Chaos theory act as starting points for quasi-scientific investigations. Research into branching theory for example looks into the world of river systems, tributarys' and road networks, resulting in the use of map as vessel to convey the mathematical thinking behind this theory. A map is a visual representation of our world. I take fragments of this representation of reality and reconfigure the pieces as if i were assembling a jigsaw puzzle; resulting in a new reality that obeys different laws, whilst still retaining aspects of own familiar world. During its assembly this puzzle follows certain rules in it's creation that echo the assembly of our own world: by using atom-like building blocks, a new kind of existence is painstakingly mapped out. Each investigation leads to a personal translation or understanding of each theory, designed to create metaphors and conversations between the works themselves, and the viewer.

Often the work is labour intensive giving the impression of a kind of natural formation, where rocks and land are slowly formed, or reformed. As each piece takes shape it is clear to see one world breaking down whilst another emerges. During the Stew residency I have been allowed the freedom to explore these ideas in a more physical way, and create work with which the viewer can become more involved. The difference between the installation works and the more mediative pieces highlight an important contrast which demands different levels of attention and enquiry from the viewer, as if they were exploring the theory themselves. In one instance the viewer would experience the excitement of the discovery of an idea or theory; an in another they may develop a more calm and considered approach to the work, echoing the concentration and dedication a scientist or mathematician needs in order to map out a formulas and equations that will support their theories.

Member of the month is......Team Graphical !

Team Graphical are a freelance design collective who work with a wide range of clients on print, illustration, web and corporate identity projects. Steve Wikeley and Claire Fawcett are two of their key members who have been spending a lot of time at the Print Rooms recently working on a range of screen printed products and prints. For their shear hard work and dedication (and lovely products) they are our new members of the month!

Our favourites are these screen printed wallets made out of tyvek (a strong material that is almost impossible to tear) available from their shop in a range of designs and colours.

Running from Monday 5th September until Sunday 17th September get down to St Magaret's Church On St. Benedict's Street to see some top quality printmaking from Print Room members and other local artists.

Norwich Lanes Summer Fayre

Sunday 10th July, St Benedicts st, Norwich
This free event attracted huge crowds last year and celebrates the uniqueness of the Norwich Lanes and includes a chance to sample its shopping diversity and arts culture.
Taking place from 11am until 5pm, Print to the People will be among the stall holders offering some exciting new interactive screen printing activities and vote in for your favorite T-shirt competition entry!

Nature Fest!

An exciting new festival with Breckland council. The “Nature Fest” will celebrate and promote awareness of biodiversity in the Brecks. See your design screen printed on t-shirts at events this summer with print to the people's mobile print trolley.

A group of us working from Stew Print rooms have formed the new group Mesh: Illustration/Design/Print Making. We will be exhibiting work throughout March at the Rumsey Wells: Art in the Under Belly. The launch night is on the 3rd March (next Thurs!) from 8pm. Combining music and art, the poster/print designs are commissions and self-initiated projects for Olympians, Hello Bear, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals), Free King and more. All hand-made and screen-printed at Stew Print Rooms.

It's getting nearer spring and the studio is warming up! To celebrate were running another programme of workshops, full details to be announced very soon and keep an eye open for our brochures around town. For the show Christopher Joyner has been working on a series of work appropriating vintage photographs from the extensive NASA image gallery. Using the found imagery he is liberating himself from any personal experience with the original subject, then through repetitively reproducing the images they experience a mechanical abstraction and in the new context they bear a new meaning. He will be exhibiting several large scale works straight on to the walls forming an installation space for the bands performance as well as a series of smaller framed prints all made from the same appropriated images but mechanically deconstructed.

Artist in Residency Opportunity for 2011

The 2011 Alexandra Reinhardt Memorial Award, Artist in Residence

Part time, salary £10,000, deadline 2.30pm February 4th 2011.

The Alexandra Memorial Award is excited to announce a call for it’s seventh Artist in Resident.

The 2011 Alexandra Memorial Award (ARMA) will be run at The Art Room at Oxford School in association with First Story, London – a charity that places writers in challenging schools to develop literacy and creativity. The winning artist will be required to run 12 full day creative workshops at The Art Room, Oxford www.theartroom.org.uk, working with secondary school children and alongside an acclaimed writer.

The artist and writer will work together to stimulate the children in their creativity and literacy – using art as a tool to develop creative story writing, design and illustration. Artists are welcomed from any medium. The Residency will culminate in the publication of a book of work by all involved. The Artist will be required to create a public art installation for display at the school, which will also feature on the front cover of the book. This will be followed by a book launch.

The winning artist will devise his/her own working process in relation to the needs of The Art Room/First Story and will receive support from two trained Art Room therapists and a First Story professional throughout the residency.

The successful artist will be awarded £10,000, please note this includes all expenses such as travel, materials and artist's time.Please note that The Art Room is unable to provide studio accommodation and it will be the artist's responsibility to make arrangements for such a facility if required.

The appointed artist will need to pass a Criminal Record Bureau check to ensure they are cleared to work with children.

We are very excited about the program which includes, screen printing refresher, textile design, jewellery making, life drawing, origami, book binding and mark making. Poster Competition!

Print Club London are now open for submissions for their yearly poster exhibition 'Blisters Blackout'. This year they are asking every one to add a ‘glow in the dark’ element to their poster design. They will be ‘Blacking Out’ the venue at points during the opening night so your posters can really GLOW! Exciting stuff! A great opportunity to get your illustrations to a wider audience.

All posters must be screen printed, see their website for more details. Get in touch if you would like to screen print your posters with us at Stew Print Rooms or use our editioning services.

The yearly summer street fair is back again and not to be missed! The whole of Norwich lanes and St Benedicts St will be jam packed with stalls, music and festivities.
